ABOUT THE PROJECT

Williamstown High School Wetlands, VIC.

Works Included:

  • Construction of a pump station to pump up to 200 lt/sec of storm water into the wetlands from local council drains.
  • Wetland construction including;
  • Sedimentation pond.
  • Wetland microphyte ponds.
  • Open water storage.
  • Hard and soft landscaping of paths, boardwalks and preparation for planting.
  • Works added to contract:
    • 3.8m wide exposed aggregate concrete path.
    • Construction of a bike shed base and additional drainage.

Site Issues:

  • Lack of insitu clay for wetland liner.
  • Large floating and solid rock structures.
  • Location of new pump station impacting on existing sewer.
  • High pedestrian impact in surrounding areas (students and general public). A pedestrian detour was required during the construction of a new curved boardwalk across Parks Victoria land.
  • Pump station was relocated due to base rock levels.
  • Modification of existing switchboard to allow for new check meter.
  • Switchboard relocated due to proximity of water tanks.
  • Wet weather.

This was a difficult project due to limited project funding. Special thanks to Williamstown High school, GHD, Rush Wright Associates, Hobson Bay Council and parks Victoria for working together to deliver this project which allows the treatment of stormwater and provides a new learning platform for the schools biology program.
